The Lake County Coalition has been working with the local health department to distribute information about Hoosier Healthwise and enroll families in the program. In return, the coalition has helped to educate the public about lead poisoning and screening children for lead poisoning. The health department has also helped the coalition. Through this collaborative partnership, they have reached out to families by canvassing public housing complexes and health fairs where the people in most need of have been helped.
On July 6, 2007, the Lake County Coalition partnered with Managed Health Services (MHS) to sponsor an “All Faith’s Night at the Rail Cats Stadium” to increase awareness and promote enrollment in the Hoosier Healthwise Program. To encourage people to attend, coalition members and volunteers canvassed neighborhoods to speak with families, reached out to churches and approached the Guy Live Show on WLHT to provide media coverage. By conducting the event during a baseball game, the coalition was able to reach out to approximately 5,500 families. Families received health screenings, free incentives, and were offered on-site enrollment in Hoosier Healthwise. Additionally, health information was placed on the marquee outside and inside the stadium to inform parents about diabetes, asthma and the importance of immunizations.
The Lake County Coalition sponsored a “Back to School Health and Fun Fair.” The media created awareness of the event to promote enrollment in the Hoosier Healthwise Program. Volunteers also canvassed neighborhoods to encourage families to attend the event. At the event, a mobile unit provided physicals to children and Kid ID cards. Free school supplies were also given away.
