2016 Annual Report Released

BUILDING ON SUCCESS IS A FITTING THEME FOR ALL THE WORK accomplished during 2016 by Covering Kids & Families of Indiana’s (CKF-IN) board, staff and local coalitions.

Our Board of Directors led the way by completing an intensive strategic planning process. Over the next three years, CKF-IN will increase health coverage enrollment and retention, be a recognized voice on healthcare coverage issues, make significant progress on becoming a statewide organization, strengthen existing coalitions and ensure funding. CKF-IN’s vision and mission were also reviewed and updated.

During 2016, CKF-IN made great progress toward the goal of being a state-wide entity, welcoming four new coalitions covering twelve counties. This is a 28% increase in counties covered in 2016 and a 72% increase in the last two years! It is also important to note that the new coalitions are all in southern Indiana, extending our reach into some of the most underserved rural counties.

In 2016, CKF coalitions and partners completed over 33,000 applications for healthcare coverage. To support the work of the coalitions, CKF-IN published the Guidebook to School-Linked Outreach and provided initial and continuing education training to over 120 individuals for their certifications as Indiana navigators. CKF-IN was also successful in getting language inserted into House Enrolled Act (HEA 1347) requiring the Indiana Department of Insurance to conduct a study on current capacity, training, adequacy and barriers to navigators.

As Indiana HIP 2.0 moved into the spotlight as a Medicaid expansion model, so too did CKF-IN’s role in helping Hoosiers enroll in and understand their healthcare coverage. In the last weeks of 2016 following the election, Executive Director Susan Jo Thomas spoke with more that 20 reporters from national media outlets.

While 2017 holds many unknowns on the future of public healthcare coverage, Covering Kids & Families of Indiana’s commitment to helping Hoosiers navigate healthcare coverage and to advocate on their behalf will be unchanging. We will continue to build on our success.
